21ST CENTURY SKILLS WILL ADD SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT TO SHAPE OUR SCHOOL CURRICULA
Ohio's 21st century system of public education will lead to higher qualit
y, higher standards and fair and equitable funding. In 1989, the National Governors Association pledged that U.S students would lead the world in math and science by 2000. At this point we have not met this goal. But we can improve with new curriculum standards based on 21st century skills, driving significant change. The FutureofOhio.org believes Ohio educators are up to this challenge. School districts will have to align with new Ohio academic standards that call for innovation, creativity and 21st century skills. And the new Ohio Evidence Based Model incorporates research-based improvements to maximize our opportunity for success, including:
- Smaller class sizes
- All-day kindergarten
- Strategies to close achievement gaps
- Upgraded technologies for classrooms
A 21st century system of public education means creating a modern school system for a modern society, with:
- Rigorous standards to measure Ohio students against the world
- A modern curriculum based on 21st century knowledge and skills
- Multiple assessments instead of high-stakes basic tests
- Quality training, preparation and mentoring for new teachers
