Please support House Bill 318 and save $851 million for our schools
Working together as educators, we now have the state’s commitment and vision to provide high-quality educational opportunities for all our students!
But Ohio needs legislation now to close a budget gap that threatens the entire system of public education.
We must keep our promise to the students of Ohio, but we can’t do that without financial resources.
Ohio needs action now to safeguard educational opportunities for all students.
Here’s what we need to know and what we need to do!
Ohio schools face the loss of $2.3 billion in state and federal funding—here’s why:
- Due to an Ohio Supreme Court ruling, Ohio will not receive $851 million from Video Lottery Terminals at Ohio racetracks in time to balance the two-year state budget.
- Losing that $851 million could make Ohio ineligible for federal stimulus funds, widening Ohio’s budget gap to about $2.3 billion.
There is a plan.
The solution is House Bill 318, legislation for a temporary delay in income tax reductions
- Ohio must balance its budget as required by the state constitution.
- Gov. Strickland has proposed to delay a scheduled 4.2% cut in state income taxes for two years, and the Ohio House has passed the plan.
- The tax cut delay will supply $847 million in state revenues avoiding the loss of $1.5 billion in federal stimulus funding.
Educators supporting FutureofOhio.org urge Ohio legislators to pass the Governor’s plan or quickly develop a workable alternative.
We can’t short-change our students—the Future of Ohio is at stake!
